Police are looking for three men and three women, one of which allegedly slapped a straphanger after uttering anti-gay slurs while riding a No. 2 train headed downtown from the Upper West Side Monday.
Authorities say the 23-year-old victim and a friend boarded the train at the 125th Street and Lenox Avenue station at about 6 p.m. Once the train started moving, police say one of the female suspects began taking pictures of the victim and his friend.
When the victim asked the woman to stop, she allegedly began shouting anti-gay slurs at him. The ensuing argument escalated into an alleged physical assault on the victim by the woman who had started the altercation. The victim was slapped by the women.
The victim and his friend got off the train at 96th Street and Broadway and then filed a police report.
All of the suspects are described as being in their early 20s. Police released sketches of one of the female suspects and one of the male suspects. Information concerning the suspects were posted on the front pages of all major Manhattan newspapers.
Police are investigating the incident as a hate crime and promised they would put all the assets needed on the case until the criminals involved are arrested.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS.
