If NRA supporters want their guns, I say let them have their 2nd Amendment rights.

However, let's examine those rights by first noting what type of guns existed in 1791; single shot, front loading muskets. No assault weapons, no armour piercing bullets; just long guns that allowed one shot before you needed to put it down to reload.

That's what NRA members have a right to, and they should get nothing else...that's how ya stop the utter lunacy perpetuated by the 2nd Amendment.

Other countries have citizens with guns....but they don't kill each other like the U.S.

If the world was a classroom, America would be standing in the corner.

I agree completely. Thankfully since 1991 the US has seen a steady decline in overall personal crimes and the homicide rate has steadily dropped to half of what it once was.

This is a trend that has been happening in most of the industrialized world, with the notable exception of Australia.

Since 1996 and the gun ban in Australia homicide has dropped from 1.9/100K to 1.6/100K while overall personal crime has risen from 3.1 in 1995 to 7.2 in 2010. Not really sure what else changed in Australia besides law abiding citizens not having the same access to firearms to defend themselves that changed in Australia to cause personal crimes like robbery, assault, and rape to double in Australia while the rest of the industrialized world was seeing a decrease in these activities.

How reactionary of you to want to turn back the clock to 1791. How about the other amendments?

Slavery? Was fine then.

Abortion? Doubt the founding fathers anticipated that was a 'right'.

And don't get me started on the women's right to vote!

The list goes on, but you get the idea. Don't you? Besides the Supreme Court upheld the INDIVIDUAL 2nd amendment right only a short time ago.

I don't know how to solve the problem and neither do you, but there is a saying that when you absolutely need help RIGHT NOW, the police are only minutes away. This proved true in this case as the timeline indicates that it was all over in less than 5 minutes.

Sad that neither the heroic principal or Victoria Soto or nor the other adults were trained and armed this day or that an armed guard was not available to stop that evil bastard as soon as he started to break through the window.

So which is it? The semi automatic weapons, or the citizens who are not like others?
18 murders in Chicago within 24 hours this week and liberals deny we have a culture problem...they want to blame the weapon used. Look at Texas, everyone has guns and estmated 25% of adults carry conceals, now compare the murder rate in Texas cities to where Chicago guns are banned.

Dudes it's not the weapons, it's the quality and culture of the people. There is one form of gun control I agree with. Search warrants for weapons should be issued for the home of every felon in America, their weapons seized and stuff the thugs into jail cells. Random searches should be conducted of everyone convicted of violent crimes. Our current laws should be enforced, we should take the weapons from the thugs, that's the gun control I agree with. progressives want the honest citizens to lose their rights to have weapons, I want the thugs to lose their rights to have weapons and I want it aggressively enforced, very aggressively.

As a liberal and a gun owner myself, I wonder how someone can get a military assault rifle? That just doesn't sound right. Back in the day from my time in the National Guard, my distinct impression is that those type of weapons are designed solely for soldiers in combat. Not for use by the general public.

I can see people getting permission for obtaining pistols and single shot bolt action rifles. With extensive background checks, psychological screenings, and weapons training. Something is wrong with the system when nutjobs can get their hands on very lethal weapons.

I agree, let's start issuing the search warrants and retrive every gun from anyone who has a felony record or mental conditions deemed "dangerous" and then toss them into crowded cells when caught with a gun. But we also need to work on the root of the problem that's causing the culture to kill. If you noticed the mass murders are taking place in liberal communities by liberal whites raised to call Christmas trees, holiday trees.
#15911
I do wonder where you keep getting this reference to "holiday trees" from and why you think that anyone who isn't Christian is more prone to violence?

Especially considering that in the US the vast majority of people self describe themselves as Christian and yet we have some of the highest crime rates of all industrialized nations. As a significant factor, those countries with the highest number of non-theists tend to have the lowest crime rates of any industrialized nation.

So, where did you get the information that those who were participating in these mass murders were or were not Christian?

One thing all of them have in commen is they lead a life that distance themselves from traditional American values. Whether it be Christian or love of America, they demonstrated hatred towards those values. Every one of the mass murders, do your research!

yea, how about you turn off your internet, tv, and radio and go back to movable type. because that all the first amendment allows for you.

We need to take the guns away from felons and those who are obviously mentally unstable. CNN anchor Don Lemon is someone who shouldn't be trusted with a gun. He claimed on air that as a result of the shooting he's been on the verge of tears every second, most of the people hes have been crying 24 hours straight for the last 3 days (really?). Dudes unless you knew the victims or their families, that just isn't normal, if what he is saying is true, him and most of his friends have severe mental health issues and are in the middle of a mental break down. Most will shed a tear when they see the pictures of the children, or listen to what unfolded... but to do so for 3 days straight when you don't know the children or the families isn't normal. Either Don Lemon is a liar or he needs to be strapped down before he hurts someone.
DON LEMON: We need to get guns and bullets off the streets. Listen. For the past three days, I have been crying or on the verge of tears every second and most of the people I know have been crying 24 hours straight. Yeah – yes, we need to address mental health, but mental health in this particular issue, let's not get it twisted, is a secondary issue. If someone who has a mental issue did not have access to guns that should only be available in war zones, we would not be dealing with this.
