"A rising tide lifts all boats."-johnfibs
This is a perfect example of johnforbes thinking in cartoonish platitudes. It is literally false as well as figuratively false.
A rising tide does not lift a boat with holes in its hull. It doesn't life a boat that is overloaded. It doesn't lift a boat that is anchored to the bottom without any slack in the line. It doesn't lift a boat the has been burned to its framework.
This is what capitalism did to the 'boats' of indigenous people around the planet. johnforbes can't grasp that the "standard of living" of the millions of dead people caused by capitalism is zero. They have none. But the blase discarding of all those people with no standard of living at all really raises the measured average standard of living for the remaining survivors.
But even that measurement simply ignores the millions of people living in slavery today due to capitalism (in absolute numbers, more than at any time in human history.) There are people living on Thai factory fishing ships at sea who get paid nothing, some never seeing land again until they die. This is according to the Thai government.

There are millions living as sex slaves, and no, their standard of living is not higher than if capitalism hadn't made them sex slaves. One's standard of living is not higher just because your pimp gives you 'free' addictive drugs which the workers probably wouldn't have if they were not slaves.
There are millions of people living as slaves doing domestic work, and their standard of living is not higher just because they don't have to pay for their room and board any longer.
There are hundreds of thousands living in sweltering shipping containers, working for a pittance until they finally realize they will never get out, and then many commit suicide to escape. Their standard of living is not higher than those plowing a rice paddy in the country just because they now have clothes made by slave labor in another country.
Entrepreneurs like Columbus and Pizarro sought out venture capitol investors and then, to get 'Bill Gates rich' proceeded to enslave and rape and pillage around the world, "creating wealth" for the top 1% while wiping out entire civilizations and destroying the environment wherever they went, leaving those who survived unable to provide for themselves any longer due to the devastation brought by the capitalists. It is not considered a higher standard of living that someone now consumes bottled water they must buy from Nestle when before they could have drawn water from an unpolluted river or a well that was on public land and is now on corporate land. But the bottled water that is purchased is included in the calculations for "a higher standard of living," but the free water they had previously is not.
Even travesties closer to johnny's home like the Johnstown flood of the Triangle Shirtwaist fire are ignored because those people died and thus do not enter into his "standard of living" calculations any longer. Apologists for capitalism only parade the condition of the survivors.
johnforbes prefers to overlook the massive misery brought on by capitalism and instead touts the marvels of televisions and washing machines as evidence of a high standard of living, dishonestly conflating that with "quality of life." This is because he has forgotten what it is to not live as a slave. He would rather just ignore all the boats that have been burned, had holes punched in them, or had the lake dry up due to capitalism.
