Today Maryland's Gov. O'Malley stated offically that he would like to be President. LOL If anyone tells you that he would be a good President, laugh in their face.

We now have a :flush tax, a rain water tax, motor vehicle taxes have increased, State Property taxes have increased, Many fees (read hidden taxes) have gone up drastically (sometimes 200%+) and our toll roads have increased the tolls greatly. Example_I use the Rt. 40 Hatem Bridge to travel to one of my offices regularly. The annual pass ised to be $5.00 now it is $29.00. The one way/ one time toll was $2.00, it is now $8.00. O'Malley has taken the State Highway Trust Fund, the Chesapeake Bay Fund, The State Employees Pension Fund and used them to balance the budget (he can now say he didn't raise the state sales tax of 6 cents.

O'Malley is proof positive that our Presidential selection sustem is broken.

Hey Snake,

I just gotta ask a serious question....all these new taxes...has anything improved?

Has the toll road you use been repaired/resurfaced or otherwise fixed? Is it still full of potholes?

Put something in your hand that you can honestly say has improved from the higher taxation.....

I mean something that was WORTH the expenditures.

I had a guy working for me at IBM in the mid-80s....was giving him his yearly appraisal.....
He was not happy that I took him down a level in the appraisal ranking system.
I told him just as I stated above....put something, any accomplishment, that you made this past year into my hand; give me some proof that you have performed in your job duties. He couldn't do it.

From that point on, I have always wanted to see results. I am a results oriented individual.

Throughout the recession progressives constantly told us it was time to raise taxes. Maryland's largest tax increases in its history began in 2007. Its minimum wage will continue to rise $1 each year until 2016. Things should be great in Maryland.
Maryland Loses 6,500 Small Businesses in Three Years

Annapolis – Change Maryland announced today that nearly 6,500 small businesses vanished or left the state since 2007 – more evidence of a sharp decline in the productive components of the economy. As with other reports Change Maryland has produced, this publicly available data comes from government sources, namely the U.S. Census Bureau.

“Governor O’Malley says repeatedly the most important priority is ‘jobs, jobs, jobs,” said Change Maryland Chairman Larry Hogan. “If we are to hold the Governor accountable to the standard he set, then by every objective measure he has failed miserably.”

This latest Change Maryland report draws on census bureau economic research that quantifies the number of firms from one to 99 employees during 2007 to 2010, the latest year for which numbers are available. Confirming earlier Change Maryland findings, government data shows the state’s ability to support business, produce jobs and maintain its tax base is eroding. This report comes on the heels of Maryland leading the region in job loss this year and in out-migration of tax payers from 2007 to 2010.

Since 2007, in addition to losing 6,494 small businesses, Maryland has lost 31,000 residents of tax-paying households and 40,000 jobs. “The pattern here is unmistakable,” said Hogan. “In record numbers, taxpayers, jobs and small businesses are fleeing state government’s big-spending, over-taxed, over-regulated, anti-jobs agenda.”

Maryland’s loss of small businesses is statistically tied with Delaware as the worst in the region, as a percentage of such firms that existed in 2007. Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia saw relatively smaller declines in a period of economic activity marked by pre-recession, recession and feeble recovery. On a percentage basis of firms lost, Delaware lost 4.72%, Maryland 4.71%, West Virginia 4.51%, Virginia 3.66%, and Pennsylvania 2.64%, Washington D.C., on the other hand, experienced a 2.59% gain in small businesses.

D.C. Councilmember Jack Evans, in widely reported remarks this Spring, said, “thank God Maryland keeps raising their taxes.” Earlier this month, Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell reminded Governor O’Malley in a joint appearance on CNN that “businesses and people are fleeing Maryland for Virginia because he’s raising taxes on just about everything that moves.”

In a separate report this Spring , Change Maryland documented a record 24 tax and fee increases from 2007 to 2012 that remove an additional $2.4 billion from the economy annually.

“We are no longer able to compete in our region,” said Hogan. “There should be no mistaking the fact that neighboring jurisdictions see our loss as their gain.”

States like Texas and Florida, that are run by Republicans are doing well. States like New York, California, Illinois, and New Jersey (and apparently, Maryland) are in the toilet. Texas and Florida don't have a state income tax while the rest are taxing everything in sight and still can't improve anything, in fact they are going backwards.

What lesson can we learn from these FACTS?

In NYC they just completed a major resurfacing of one major bridge, and they are resurfacing three other major bridges. Plus they are constructing a brand new bridge across the Hudson River. Other than the congestion at times, the roads are in good condition given the traffic volume.

So you are happy with the amount of money you pay in taxes, because you deem the money well spent?

Elk...do you pay taxes? I do. But since we are all anonymous here, no one knows for sure about the status of anyone...I will truthfully tell you I pay taxes. About 8,000 a year to my county alone. Truth.

So, truthfully...do you pay taxes, or do you receive from the government?

It is very easy for me to understand your viewpoint IF you don't really pay much in taxes. But if you are one of the multitude that pays hard earned money into the system, I really don't understand why you are so gung-ho on government. They are wasting your hard earned money.

I started a small business in 1990, it lasted 6 years, until it was purchased and assimilated into another.
During that six years, when I personally had to handle all the taxation requirements, the fees, the general government bullshit that a business has to endure....I really saw first hand how badly the government operates. They are NOT good stewards of the money they collect from us.

Do you have such experience, or do you get your paycheck, look at the bottom line, consider yourself happy with your take home pay, and pay no attention to the withholdings?

Look at your municipality/county government....see that in general, 50% of your property taxes go to schools.
Fifty percent.....and look at the results. Pitiful.
Waste and corruption abounds in anything the government touches.

1. The is a huge flea market in Cecil County, Md. that used to be all non-Hispanic marketers and several Amish farmers selling thir local, organic produce. In the past ten years the flea market has changed to majority Hispanic and the Amish are down to one farmer. Many, if not most, of the sale items are geared to the Hispanic market.

2. There are two Italian sub shops in my area where all of the cooks are Hispanic.

3. There are two (probably more) landscaping businesses that have all Hispanic workers. Both are very large and do mostly commercial and government contracts.

4. O'Malley has stated that the Feds are welcome to bring illegals to this state while they await resolution of their immigration cases. (Do I detect future votes here?)

5. http://dhmh.maryland.gov/mhhd/Documents ... y-Data.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; This will open your eyes to what is happening in Maryland and the rest of the country.

6. Lancaster County, PA. has a huge Hispanic population. This is Amish country.

7. Maryland's construction industry is becoming largely Hispanic. Hammer and handsaw=instant carpenter.

Comment: A poster above called Maryland a welfare state. I cannot disagree with that statement. You can't make anyone mad can you? After all, there are votes out there. LOL Not to worry tho; we can always tax the businesses because they have plenty of money.

Comment: (The other side of the coin.) this past week a large Md. employer (a high tech firm) was on NPR. He stated that over 50% of his employees come from other countries. When asked why, he said that the American worker does not have the knowledge that workers from other countries do. He said that too many american workers with degrees have to be taugh basic math, chemistry and physics before he can put them to work. (Caveat. I do not have direct knowledge of this fact.)

Comment: 12 million undocumented people in this country. Why? Who is responsible for allowing our borders to be so pourous? What would it take to make our borders more secure? I hear that we can't send these illegals back to their own country, why? Am I really wrong that, when someone talks about illegal aliens, I think criminals?

I urge board members to open the link that I posted. The facts are shocking and probably are indicative of what is happening in all states.

Examples:

1. Over 41% of Hispanics spoke English less than very well in Maryland. How can these people get a job in Maryland? If they can't work how can they support themselves?

2. The mortality rates for Hispanic from cancer, heart disease, etc. rose greatly among Hispanics. Who is paying for this medical care?

3. 7.5% of Hispanics in Md. had very late or no prenatal care during pregnancy.

This immigration issue is one that can do us in as a world power or, with common sense immigration rules, can keep us on the top of the heap. My own ancestors came to this country in 1908 legally. They learned English, became citizens and prospered. None ever asked for public assistance as this was considered shameful. All I ask is that others coming to this country do the same. I don't think I'm being unreasonable with that idea.

We keep hearing that it is impossible to send all undocumented workers back to their home country. If hiring an undocumented worker meant an automatic 5 years in jail I'm sure that the number of undocumented workers would greatly decrease almost overnight.

It's always fascinating to me how so many people, especially on the Internet, claim to be descended from "people that came here legally and properly," when in actual real facts most of us are descended from people that just showed up.

No need to reconsider anything. Through omission, you have clearly indicated that you, like most people on the Internet, especially conservatives, are descended from fully legal immigrants. Again you should proudly fly that flag alongside your Gadsen "Don't Tread On Me" flag and bumper stickers.

If you say so, it must be true. Belief is the chief provenance of conservatives: You people merely have to believe something for it to be true.

Have you been back to Ellis Island to see where your people legally, as opposed to illegally, arrived?
By johnforbes

Most people who refer to Ellis don't know how late it opened, or that it burned down, was rebuilt, and so on.

My ancestors came through Castle Garden.

It seems that there is a cost to all of this taxation and give-aways to purchase votes with taxpayer's money.
There are needed taxes that aren't buying votes but unearned benefits such as food stamps, Obama phones, subsidized housing, etc are 100% to buy votes. The real problem is our government is stealing from earned benefits such as Social Security to subsidize unearned benefits to buy votes. It should be a crime and it should make tax paying citizens very angry.

Justme-Don't miss the point of my post above. 8000 businesses gone under the O'Malley administration. $2.4 billion in new taxes/fees taken out of the economy. I doubt very much if O'Malley would be reelected if it was possible for him to run again. The "Rain Tax" would do him in by itself. (A tax just because rain falls on your house and property!?)

Maryland used to be a great place to live. While O'Malley had NOTHING to do with the following examples, it shows what 100 years of mostly Democratic ultra-liberal governments can do to an area. (BTW-Nancy Pelosi is the daughter of Baltimore Mayor Thomas DeAlessandro Jr. drummed out of office over a kickback scandal.) The following used to be huge, huge employers. All are gone now.

Bethlehem Steel (once had well over 30,000 employees.)
Western Electric (subsidiary of Bell. Made equipment for the phone industry.)
Crown, Cork and Seal (Cans, bottle caps, steel mill.)
Eastern Stainless Steel (Lost because of a dispute with Maryland.)
Proctor and Gamble (Huge manufacturing facility.)
Armco Steel (Made specialty steels.)
Chevrolet Plant. (Huge employer. Pickup trucks, school bus chassis, truck chassis, some models of cars. Years ago your Chevrolet pickup trick was probably made in Maryland.)
Bethlehem Shipbuilding
Standard Oil Refinery

I estimate the just the above employers employed 200,000 people at their peak. If we didn't have our port facilites (managed by a Dubai company) and our railroads, Maryland would have no jobs and no people. It doesn't help that 1 in 22 people in Baltimore is estimated to be a drug addict.
